April 2007

April 27th, 2007

As I begin my term as President of BCWWA I am impressed by the fact that BCWWA is more than an association - it is a network of British Columbians and Yukoners with common interests and goals. We have different areas of concern and expertise, we are many people doing a variety of things, but because we all play a role in protecting water quality we are all important parts of the whole. BCWWA speaks for the water and the wastewater operators in BC and the Yukon. We speak for the Cross Connection Control technicians and the trainers in multiple sectors of the water industry. We speak for the designers and the builders of systems, the suppliers of equipment and the people who legislate the systems. These varied members of BCWWA strive to be as informed and educated as they can possibly be and BCWWA supports that goal by providing courses, seminars, workshops and conferences to pass along necessary expertise and experience. Our new Board and our Leadership Council will work to provide the framework for this and in the coming weeks I look forward to sharing with you information about things that are happening within the organization and beyond.

I have talked a lot in recent weeks about the upcoming Annual Conference. It is BCWWA’s largest single event. Part of the value of the conference is in its offerings of CEU credit sessions. But there are other places where these credits are available and other significant activities that happen over and over, including various ‘schools’ around the province. One of these is the BCWWA Operator’s Symposium that takes place at Langara College each spring. This year the Operator’s Symposium is happening the week immediately following the Annual Conference, from April 30 – May 4. With a greater emphasis on operator education than ever before this is another one of the places that operators can learn more about what they do and meet the CEU requirements that they must address. We have already added a course to meet the demand and that school is just about full (call to confirm because not all of the classes are at the max.) BCWWA is all about training/education/information sharing. We count on interested parties (that’s you) to let us know what they want and need so if the Vancouver ‘school’ doesn’t work for you there is likely another that will. Or maybe we need to put together something special for your group. We can and we will. Call us.

BCWWA is a busy organization. The annual conference and some of our regular symposia are often top of mind, but they are not all we are doing. In development right now is a specialty workshop that will deal with Boil Water Advisories – why they come, how to advise the public, what to do next. Plus we are working on a seminar that addresses some of the challenges of our changing population – how that will affect the work that we do and what we might consider doing to help things work better. We have just gotten confirmation that we will be moving ahead with a planned session in the fall that talks about wastewater. Plus there are many, many regular courses taking place on an ongoing basis. As the pre-eminent source of information and expertise for water and wastewater issues BCWWA is proud to provide all of our members with access to these training sessions and continues to work to expand the offerings. Your task? Tell us about what you would like to see – we may be able to help.
