Water Technician

The City of Courtenay invites applications for the position of "Water Technician” in the Transportation & Utilities Maintenance Division. This is a union position and is subject to the terms and conditions outlined in the current collective agreement between the City and CUPE Local 556
This position is responsible for providing technical support, scheduling activities and reviewing results relevant to the operation and maintenance of the water distribution, wastewater and storm collection systems. The Water Technician participates in the efficient day-to-day planning of preventative maintenance programs and the effective implementation of industry best practices relative to the system(s). This position is also responsible for performing technical work related to the development, implementation and optimization of the division’s maintenance programs.

Minimum qualifications include:

  • Completion of a two year Diploma of Civil Engineering Technology.
  • Certified membership in the Applied Science Technologists and Technicians of British Columbia as an Applied Sciences Technologist or as a Certified Technician.
  • Current Environmental Operator Certification Program (EOCP) Water Distribution Level II certification (Preferred)
  • Current certification as a Cross Connection Control Inspector from a recognized institution.
  • Valid British Columbia Class 5 Drivers License
  • Sound (3 years) experience in public works and utilities environment with emphasis on planned preventative maintenance, installation and repair, and the safe and efficient operation of a water system.
  • Considerable knowledge of AWWA standards, industry best practices and legislation related to water system operations.
  • Considerable knowledge of water distribution construction and maintenance practices
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and report writing skills
  • Strong computer skills including MS Office, ArcGIS and databases
  • Ability to work well as a member of a team and independently
  • Ability to oversee the work of others
  • Ability to interpret and apply City bylaws, policies, procedures, engineering design standards and specifications
  • Ability to read blue prints, construction drawings and schematics

This is a regular full-time position available immediately. The 2017 hourly wage rate based on a 40-hour workweek is $34.39.
