AWWA Webcast Explores Science Behind Nanotechnology

The American Water Works Association will host its fourth annual Career Fair for students, young professionals and job seekers from 1-4 pm June 10 during AWWA’s Annual Conference and Exposition (ACE08) at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta.

The ACE08 Career Fair is an ideal opportunity for people interested in careers in the water industry to learn more
about the water profession and meet with top water and wastewater firms and utilities. As in the past, more than
200 attendees and 30 exhibitors are expected to participate.

Job seekers wishing to attend the ACE08 Career Fair should submit their résumés at AWWA’s online career

BCWWA's New Staff Member: Wendy Szeto!

Wendy Szeto is the newest member of the BCWWA team. Wendy graduated from Simon Fraser University with a degree in Criminology, and worked as an office assistant at the BCWWA in the summer of 2007.

Wendy will be taking on the position of Training and Education Coordinator, organizing the educational courses offered by our association. She is excited to be back and is looking forward in expanding her knowledge in the water industry!

Recruitment of Water and Sanitation Experts

CANADEM is an Ottawa-based NGO mandated to assist the UN recruit and identify civilian experts for peace and development operations.  To do this, CANADEM maintains a roster of 9000+ registrants whose collective expertise can satisfy virtually any vacancy, including governance, humanitarian relief, human rights, water & sanitation, among others (for more information, visit www.canadem.ca).

CANADEM is currently seeking Emergency Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene professionals for UN missions around the world. The candidates should have the following profile:

- Minimum 7 years professional experience at national and international levels in emergency water and sanitation, programme planning, management, monitoring, and/or evaluation.
- Minimum of 4 years direct WASH emergency experience at least two of which would be based in the field at a programme management level.
- University degree (minimum BA degree) from a recognized institution in Public Health / Water and Sanitation Engineering / Hydro-Geology or related field, or other related field

Annual Conference Update: Get Your CEUs!

The Environmental Operators Certification Program (EOCP) has awarded Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for the 2008 BCWWA Annual Conference & Trade Show. The Technical Program for this year will be worth a maximum total of 1.8 CEUs: morning and afternoon sessions on Monday and Tuesday will be valued at 0.3 CEUs each, and each of the Wednesday Technical Transfer Sessions will be worth 0.6 CEUs.

Coping with Climate Change: Press Release

For BC’s engineers, planners and environmental scientists, the need to adapt plans and projects to account for climate change has become critical.  In response to this challenge, three of BC’s leading professional organizations, the Air and Waste Management Association (AWMA), the BC Water and Waste Association (BCWWA), and the Canadian Water Resources Association (CWRA) have been working together to provide leadership on this issue. The result is two complementary symposia scheduled for late April 2008.

 BC Hydro Recognizes Energy Leadership in Province's Workplaces
Deadline: February 29, 2008
BC Hydro is now accepting nominations for a new Power Smart Excellence Award to recognize individuals or teams from across the province, who best exemplify an energy conservation ethic in their workplace. The Workplace Conservation Leadership Award will be presented to employees who have taken steps to reduce their organization's overall environmental footprint through energy conservation measures. Any individual whose role is not energy management is eligible, and awards will be available in three categories: commercial/institutional, industrial and government.

Annual Conference Super Saver Deadline is Approaching!

Take note! In order to receive the Super Saver rates for the 2008 BCWWA Annual Conference & Trade Show, the BCWWA office must receive your registration by 4 p.m. on Monday, March 3rd.

Also, if you would like to register your company using the Manufacturers, Suppliers & Consultants (MSC) option (paying the $600 company fee and receiving a reduced rate for additional attendees), the deadline is Friday, March 7th. Companies paying the company fee will be listed in the Watermark magazine, on the website and in the Conference Pocket Program.

BCWWA provides training and education to water, wastewater and small water systems operators throughout British Columbia, the Yukon, and the Northwest Territories. We are currently looking for a Training and Education Coordinator who will be responsible for coordinating and overseeing the delivery of BCWWA courses.

 BCWWA's Newest Staff Member

Introducing BCWWA’s newest staff member: Sarah Vaughan. Sarah will be taking on the position of Communications & Projects Coordinator, working primarily on the Annual Conference and Trade Show and the Watermark magazine, and assisting with seminars and marketing projects.

Sarah is a graduate of the UBC Bachelor of Arts in English Literature program, and has work experience in other not-for-profit organizations. She is excited to bring her communication skills to the BCWWA, and learn more about the water and wastewater industry as she grows into this position.
