Information Sessions: Groundwater Licensing Requirements and Groundwater Protection Regulation

The British Columbia Ground Water Association is pleased to be facilitating Ministry-led Information Sessions on new regulations now in effect under the Water Sustainability Act in conjunction with the BCWWA 2016 Conference and Trade Show.

These sessions will inform on the new Ground Water Protection Regulation and new requirements for Groundwater Licensing under the Water Sustainability Regulation.

Session Overview

This information session will be presented by representatives from the BC Ministry of Environment and/or BC Ministry of Forests, Lands, and Natural Resource Operations and is intended to inform groundwater consultants, potential licensees, and some well drillers and well pump installers on new groundwater licensing requirements under the Water Sustainability Act.  It will explain the overall framework for the granting of water rights (First-In-Time First-In-Right or FITFIR) and the rights and responsibilities related to the use of groundwater. Water licence application requirements for existing and new groundwater users will be reviewed, as well as key stipulations associated with a water licence (appurtenancy, water use purposes, transfers, amendment, etc.). Groundwater connectivity to surface water will also be addressed, including implications for water allocation and regulation during times of scarcity.
